Care for Abnormal & Heavy Bleeding in Queens, NY
Menstrual flow varies a great deal from woman to woman. How do you know if your menstrual bleeding is within normal limits? How long does it take to soak a pad (side to side and front to back) or a tampon?
Abnormal bleeding typically occurs when menstrual cycles are too frequent or too scarce, flow is long, flow is heavy or there is bleeding between periods. The normal woman’s cycle may be 24 to 32 days, with an average of 28 days. If you have an occasional cycle that is longer or shorter, it does not mean you’re abnormal. If you suspect a problem, keep a calendar of your cycles.
Heavy or prolonged flow (more than seven days) can lead to anemia and fatigue. A calendar of your cycles will help Dr. Cherenfant determine whether you have a problem. He’ll take you health history and perform a physical exam, blood tests and possibly a biopsy or ultrasound exam to determine the cause of prolonged or heavy bleeding.
Your treatment options
Sometimes, simply taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or naproxen will help reduce the volume of your flow. Oral contraceptives also help regulate periods for some women who also need birth control. An IUD can also help you manage heavy bleeding. Dr. Cherenfant performs endometrial ablation in an outpatient setting and in his office to eliminate more serious heavy bleeding.
